Is your wood flooring already worn? Has it already gone through rigorous tests and is now looking old and pale? It may be time to refinish your wood floor and make it look new again.

How do you know it's time to refinish the floor? You can do this simple step. Go to the area where the floor is usually used, perhaps your living room. Get a tablespoon of water and pour it on the floor. If the water forms beads and can easily be wiped out, it is not necessary to paint it yet. Your floor is still in good condition.

If the water you just poured slowly seeps into the floor and creates a visible spot, it may already need refinishing touches. You may want to keep it in your to-do list and schedule a time where you can do the refinishing. However, if the water seeps in as fast as you had poured it, do not waste more time. Your floor definitely needs refinishing, and soon.

Refinishing your hardwood floors will require equipment such as a drum sander. Other equipment may be needed for other more detailed information in the final treatment. You do not have to buy equipment, though. This equipment is available for rent at your local home stores such as Home Depot. You can rent them on a daily or weekly basis.

Different grit papers are used in the drum sander for different floor types. Sandpaper lower the number, the coarser for use on more damaged forests. Once you've chosen the right sandpaper, you can now start to grind the tree using the equipment. It is suggested that you make sanding diagonally in both directions then along the grain.

When you're done sanding the entire floor with the procedure, repeat the process again with finer grit paper (one with a higher number). After sanding the whole floor again, you can now sharpen the edges with a spinner   edger machine.

Vacuuming is the next step to clean off the sand dust. Should there be gaps present after the sanding process, fill them with sand dust mixed with varnish to form a paste. So leave the floor alone for a while.

After a few hours, repeat the sanding process again, this time do it along the grain with a very fine gravel. Do this two times the highest number with the last grit sanding. Once in vacuum the floor again and wipe off the sand dust.

Once all dust, it is now time to apply the coat. You could use a roller to do this. Before using the roller, make sure it is clean first with a stiff brush to remove dirt and loose hair that can get into the finish.

The urethane coating can now be set on the floor of the corn strips. When the whole series of strips are done, return to strip and make sure there are no roller marks or polyurethane build up.

Let the first coating dry for a while. When the coat is completely dry, the next step is to sand the entire floor with a sander. Vacuum and sweep the floor afterwards to remove the dust.

Finally, now the second coating is applied using the same procedure as the first. When you do the second coating, ensure that the sun does not shine through the window to any part of the floor to avoid uneven ground.

Refinishing your wood flooring is relatively easy as long as you have the right equipment. The rent is a bit expensive, but not as expensive as replacing your entire floors. You can even save more doing it yourself than hiring someone to do it for you. Besides, would not you be proud to show off your work and tell your friends you did it yourself?

Nice furnished or refinished floors make your home more beautiful. This is also a healthy alternative than carpeting. Carpets are known to cause allergies because they are hard to clean. Just bare, nicely finished wood flooring will help you to have a healthy environment inside your own home. Dust, pests, mold and animal stains can easily be cleaned up also.
